New Year New Shows

As I sit here wondering how to get more people to see my hand-made work, I then think “I should really be MAKING more jewelry”!  Sometimes I wonder how, what, why I do this?? There is that constant struggle between being a stay-at-home-mom and creating art and jewelry to sell!  There is only so much time in the day, sometimes it seems like I have a lot of time but then it’s 9pm and I am just “getting to work”.

The balance between creating and selling hand-made wavers between me being the maker and marketer of my work!  I truly do love making but often marketing is where the seesaw hits the dirt for me!  Facebook used to be great for exposure but lately it seems less people see the posts and photos I add to my Business page, Sunshine On Water.  A few years ago that was not the case because everyone who had “liked” my page had access to a post if they happened to be on FB at the time.  Oh, so nice!!  Now it seems anyone who has “liked” my business page much hover over my page, then scroll down and click on “Get Notifications”  in order to see any new posts I add…therefore the reach is much smaller hence less people see my latest jewelry.  Ok, I just explained what to do but yes, this does involve a little work!

There is that option, of course, for business pages to pay for “boosts”, I haven’t done this but I do wonder how well it works?

Now it’s time to stop thinking and start doing… making jewelry that is. I have my first show of the year this coming Saturday and I am really looking forward to it!  If you’re in the Rochester, NY area and free on Saturday, come on over to Schroeder High School in Webster for Community Arts Day! It’s a fun event showcasing the many talents in Webster from Elementary School art students to hand-made artists in the community, like me!  This will be my 4th year at this event and it’s always a lot of fun!! Sharing my creations with others in the community is what it’s all about!

Below is all the info you need on Webster Community Arts Day… I hope to see you there!

Holiday Bazaar Arts and Craft Show

Posted on Updated on

I just finished a 3 day craft show at the Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, NY. It was a great show, so many talented artists from all over the area and beyond NY. The woman vending next to me was from Cleveland and another vendor nearby was from south of Scranton, PA! I had so much fun sharing my jewelry with others and meeting new people. A handful of customers who passed by or stopped, had bought jewelry from me at a previous show! I sold these little chili pepper and sterling earrings this weekend! It was exciting since they were the only pair I had like them, and they’ve found a new home!

It was a long but fun weekend, now to continue with custom orders and prep for my next show this Sunday at the Rochester Public Market! In the meantime check out my etsy shop, Sunshine On Water for Christmas gift ideas!!

Life is like a see-saw, enjoy the “mom moments”

Posted on Updated on

I am a stay at home mom, I am other things but that is what I am right now and it is crazy!!! I realized the other day that there is just not enough time to do everything, I always knew it but just never completely realized it, I guess!  Between kids and a small business it is crazy to balance both.  Its like a see-saw, one side is always tipping more than the other and right now there might as well be an elephant sitting on the mom side!!  Between Halloween costumes, Halloween events, softball lessons, helping with homework for one child and trying to keep up with the other who is in preschool, there is barely enough time to rake our yard which is covered in Maple leaves and last but not least make jewelry for upcoming shows!!!  Whew!  I try, I really try to keep up the explosion of Halloween candy strewn across the floor, dishes in the sink and the laundry that needs to be folded but come on, just because I am a stay at home mom doesn’t mean I love to clean OR do laundry all day!!  I would much rather be making new jewelry, updating my etsy shop or finding new retail boutiques to carry my work!!

Working moms, I have no idea how you fit it all in when you get home, I AM home and barely have time… I guess part of it is about staying organized to avoid a total meltdown!  I would love to make 10 rings a day but in reality that is not happening at this moment!  I have a boy to get to preschool and a lunch period to cover at my daughters school, if I get a half hour in at the gym I will be happy!!  Someday, I know that see-saw will balance out a little more and I will have more time to myself. Then most likely at some point it will tip up so high I will start to miss my kids!  SO for now, I will enjoy these “mom moments” because they don’t last forever, do they?!

My 100th sale on etsy!

Posted on Updated on

I finally made it!!   One week ago I had my 100th sale on etsy!  It took awhile but I made it and am proud I persevered as a seller on etsy!  Four years ago, I opened an etsy shop under another name.  I didn’t list anything but at least I had opened a shop.  I’ll admit, I had no idea what I was doing.  Looking back, my pictures were horrible, my titles were short and I only used about 4 out of the 13 tags allowed when listing an item for sale.  Tags are what help you get found in online search….the more tags you use the more chances you have of getting found!  How could I have only use 4 tags?  The only possible answer is, I just didn’t know!  I had NO idea. I had no boss or adviser teaching me, guiding me or giving me constructive criticism, it was just me.

Since 2010, I have changed my etsy shop name 2 times.  I am finally happy with Sunshine On Water, it fits me and my jewelry.  Knowing that I have a much more cohesive look between my shop and my work is important.  It’s still a learning process though which I think is good thing because what works today might not in a month!

On occasion, I have had people ask how I like etsy, what works & what doesn’t…. in general, etsy is a great place for people to see your work. I think of it as an online portfolio where people I meet can reference my work, look on their own time and maybe (hopefully) by something.  They may even become a loyal customer!

Since my 100th sale, I have thought a lot about my work and how to best describe it on etsy.  At craft shows I am there interacting with customers, on etsy that’s not the case…. hence the etsy “About” section.  “About” is a section each shop can choose to include for etsy viewers to read. It gives insight on the artist and the product they make.  Today I finally reworked my “About” section to better reflect me and my work!  You can read it  here and let me know what you think!

Salsa to Silver

Posted on Updated on

Fall is here and the leaves are starting to change colors!  Now is the time to harvest the last of your tomatoes in the Northeast! I love making homeade salsa with fresh tomatoes, it’s easy, tastes so much better than the canned version (in my opinion) and my kids like it!  If you don’t have a garden, stop at a local farm-market instead…All you need is:

1 or 2 Fresh tomatoes chopped into small pieces, red or sweet onion chopped, a few cloves of garlic finely chopped, black pepper, a few squeezes of fresh lime juice, a pinch of salt and cilantro for garnish.  Mix it together, let it sit briefly to absorb flavors and serve with tortilla chips!  It’s easy and so good you’ll want to make more the next day!

Along with outdoor activities and farm markets to visit, I have been getting ready for upcoming art and craft shows in Upstate NY.  I recently ordered new sterling silver from Thunderbird Supply since the price of silver has gone down quite drastically the past few weeks.  As of today, Monday, the price has gone up to 17.32 US dollars per troy ounce.  It’s time to get to working on new jewelry designs!  You can see new necklaces on my etsy shop, Sunshine On Water…all are hand-formed and come with a sterling silver chain!
